What is a fantasy album?

A fantasy album is an album of music that never was, but perhaps could have been, if the artists had been inclined to (or legally able to) produce and release it.

A fantasy album is plausible as a concept — a collective effort of different artists to put forward a theme, or an alternative that could coexist with an artist’s real works. It is more than a set of playlists with liner notes. Careful attention is paid to the starting and ending song of each album “side” and the song sequence throughout, in order to re-create the album experience of that time and to put forth a concept.

The Beatles fantasy “Red Album” is an example. It addresses the idea of what the Beatles might have released if they hadn’t broken up — based on their solo releases.

What makes a fantasy album great?

A fantasy album should be plausible, such as a collective effort of different artists, or an alternative to an artist’s real album. The artists must have been available at the times and places of the recordings. 

I discourage collections of outtakes of real albums, mostly because the songs should be readily available, and because it’s not a “concept” for a fantasy. (Someone should invent another idea for outtake albums, not “fantasy album”).

An essential part of the album experience is listening intently to each song in sequence. With albums on vinyl records, you had to get up from your cozy couch and turn over the vinyl to play the other side. The equivalent experience today is separating the sides into playlists.

The tendency in making a retrospective imaginary album is to not include songs that aren’t as good as others, or that don’t make the cut due to a different theme, rhythm, or tone. Such an album might be concise and demonstrate which songs you think were best. But that is not my goal.

My goal is to imagine what the fantasy album would have been like if the artists had deliberately chosen to put it together. I want to expose as much of the solo music as possible, but in a proper, thoughtful context that makes it easy to suspend judgement and pretend that they are part of a real Beatles album.

This involves comparing song endings to beginnings for smoother and more Beatle-like transitions, paying attention to the main chords for matching up songs, and most importantly, placing songs so that their lyrics answer each other, or go together in theme or topic. I give George Harrison more songs than ever before, which is what he wanted, and Ringo gets more songs as well.
